Love Thy Neighbor: The Time I was Threatened with Lawsuit

I posted War or Cheesecake Factory two weeks ago about an experience where tone made all the difference. I’d like to share two more examples when tone benefited me with my neighbors.

When my below neighbor got angry with me about a supposed leak that flooded her unit it wasn’t the first time I’d been yelled at by a neighbor about a leak.  In fact, the last time I was threatened to be sued.  Let me explain.

I had a great relationship with my below neighbors before they sold their place to the current tenant.  It was a grandparently relationship.  The older gentleman would come over and help with my toilet, etc.  We would drop off a card and cookies to them on holidays.

One day they came to me and told they had black mold, and worse, it was my fault.  The details don’t matter but basically there was a leak (supposedly) coming from me, they had found it, and they were upset.  I communicated with them throughout to help however I could.

This man that had come to feel like a grandpa came up one evening and told me, basically, that there might be a lawsuit with my name on it and he didn’t want me to be caught off guard.

    My response you ask?

“Oh, ok,” in a cheery, not at all concerned tone.

This was a combination of meek demeanor and ignorance.  It was hours later, sitting on the couch, before it hit me.  Oh!  They just threatened to sue me.

I don’t know if they ever truly intended to sue me.  What I do know is I never heard another word about it.  I can only think my ignorance and kind reception at threat of lawsuit dissuaded them from taking that course of action.  They fixed the issue on their end and we moved on like that conversation never happened.  That neighbor came over multiple times in the future to help with household items, we dropped off cookies and cards multiple other times.  Life moved on.

    One more neighbor interaction story.

When this current neighbor moved in, my very first interaction was with her and her mom.  They were moving stuff in and I introduced myself.  I remember her mom jokingly saying, “now my daughter is deaf so you’ll have to yell when you speak to her.”

I don’t think this neighbor is really deaf.  Maybe hard of hearing or something like that, she can definitely hear.  I think her mom was playfully warning me about her daughter’s music tastes.

As soon as this neighbor moved in the music started.  I’m talking, floor shaking, bass moving, beats jumping, party going, music.  There weren’t many parties, but many days that sounded like parties.  This music could be at any time of the day.  Most often around midnight followed by 5 in the morning.

I think the main problem was that her speakers may have been right under our bedroom.  Beth was pregnant and sleeping some nights on the couch.  I was sleeping on the floor in the nursery some nights.  We kept hoping it would stop.  It never stopped.

One morning at 6:30am while the party was rocking, I’d had enough.  Beth was pregnant and wasn’t sleeping.  I constantly fought the urge to go down and yell and freak out.  I finally realized I had to talk to the neighbor.

I knocked on her door at 6:30.  She creaked the door open, looked at me confused like, “why are you here at 6:30am??”  I wanted to say to that face, “why is this music playing at 6:00am?”  Instead I said, again, in the kindest, softest (over the music), most meek way I could, “Hey… I just wanted to let you know we can hear the music.”

    “What?!”

“Yeah… it kind of feels like our floor is shaking right under our bed.  We’ve been having a really difficult time sleeping and you know Beth is pregnant and, just wanted to make sure you knew.”

    “It’s not even that loud.”

I looked at her dumbfounded.  She could barely hear me through the door with the music on behind her.

“Yeah well we can hear it, again, just wanted to let you know.  If you were able to turn it down a little that would help us a whole lot.”

She looked at me annoyed, and I can’t remember what she said.  I do remember walking away thinking, now what?  Are we going to have to move?  We can’t live like this.  Clearly she wasn’t going to turn down the music.

We never heard the music again.  Literally not one more time.

I think back on that often.  We could have had a disastrous start to a neighbor relationship.  Our life could have been living hell the past year.  If I went down without sleep, angry, and accused her of maliciously keeping my pregnant wife up, who knows what would have happened.  I can’t imagine anything good coming from that.

Instead we built rapport.  I explained the issue as calm and kind as I could, and hoped for the best.  The best came.  When that leak happened (see other post), we’d already established a level of respect.

I don’t write this to be like – I’m a great neighbor, check me out.  I just want to emphasize that tone and word choice can go a long way.  The way we say things makes a big difference.  Our mindset when we confront someone is important.  If you attack, they attack back, and now we’re at war.  Nobody wants war.

When you’re frustrated with someone, take one second and enter their shoes.  Why did they frustrate you?  Was it malicious?  Was it intentional?  Is there a chance they are having a bad day too?  If we all take a moment to consider the feelings of others, it would change this world.  I hope we can all take a moment and show kindness and compassion for those around us.  Our country needs it.

Love God and love thy neighbor.

    War or Cheesecake Factory

One morning at 7:30am I received a frantic call from my below neighbor yelling at me asking why I didn’t tell her my unit flooded.

I hadn’t had a ton of interactions with this neighbor, but this was the first time she yelled at me.

I calmly replied by saying, “there hasn’t been any flooding for me, what’s going on?”

She angrily told me that there must be flooding.  She hadn’t been home for a week, and she could see it coming from the ceiling and how could I not tell her we had a leak!

I said, “Let me clarify, I haven’t seen any flooding on our end.  If there’s a leak, I have no idea about it.  But I will look into it right away and see if we can find anything.”

I got details on where her flooding was and all that.

I must emphasize that she was understandably freaking out.  She was angry, she walked into her unit completely flooded and thinking I was responsible.  I responded with a calm tone and explained my side and let her know I would get to the bottom of it as soon as possible.

This neighbor had a friend come over to look at her and my unit and determined the leak was coming from her end, thank goodness I wasn’t responsible.  This friend of hers was working all evening in this hot, humid kitchen trying to fix her issue.  Beth made him up a plate for dinner.

By the end of the week, with us not having water for most of it, this neighbor was leaving us a gift card to a restaurant (see title of post if you’re wondering where).  I had been in constant communication with her throughout the week, helping however I could, and staying in touch on where they were at with repairs.  This neighbor thanked us for our patience, help, and feeding her friend dinner that night, thus the gift card.

I thought back on that 7:30am call.  What if I responded confrontationally to her call?  What if my response was, “what do you mean a leak?! We don’t have a leak! That’s your problem!”

Even if it turned out to be her problem, we would have been at war, and Beth and I wouldn’t be headed to Cheesecake Factory for a free meal tonight.

Kindness, patience, understanding, and TONE can go such a long way.

I understood immediately when my neighbor called that she wasn’t mad at ME.  She was frustrated.  That frustration may have been pointed in my direction, but if I put myself in her shoes, I could immediately understand why.

Society has become too quick to yell back.  If we all took a second and looked at it from the other person’s perspective, we’d have a lot less Twitter wars and a lot more visits to Cheesecake Factory.

I’ll take the Cheesecake factory any day.

  • I Voted

    I Voted

This is the fourth time I’ve voted for a President of the United States.  My enthusiasm for politics has ebbed and flowed every four years for each election.

This is the first time I’ve voted since I’ve been developing a politically focused mobile app and for that reason the first time I’ve voted while having serious thoughts about our political system, especially the flaws in it.

As I voted, one flaw screamed in my face: the two party system.

From what I’ve read, seen, and studied about George Washington there are two things I know about him.

George Washington | Facts and Brief Biography
    1. He was one of the most extraordinary individuals to ever walk this planet.
    2. He HATED the two-party system.

I believe some historians credit the development of a two-party system in his time as the reason he left the presidency after two terms.  That and his out of this world humility (see point 1 about his extraordinary nature).

As I went down my ballot I was struck by the amount of research I’d have to do to be an educated voter.  I was discouraged at the thought that very few people are putting in that much effort.

After all the protests, outrage, and anger over the past few months, are people voting?  Are they just voting for the President?  The President is important but he’s one piece to a huge puzzle. Albeit a bigger than average piece.  What do I know about my congressman?  My Attorney General?  My local officials?  Nothing.  I go to the internet, look up their page where they give themselves a portrayal of only smelling like flowers, decide I like their smile, and they get my vote.

    That’s the best-case scenario.

What scared me the most was my own biases.

I won’t write here what my political affiliation is.  What I will say is, as I went down my ballot, the desire to simply choose the person from my party, with no research whatsoever, was terribly tempting.  It was going to be so much work to truly vet these people.  Who has the time?

I desperately wanted to make voting easy.

The way to make it easy was to blindly support a party.

How many others fall into this category?  How many millions voted for all Democrats because that’s their party.  How many millions voted all Republican without any knowledge of the ethics or morals of those they were voting for?

The two party system is a great danger to our democracy.  It has created so much hate and vitriol in the political system, which I’ve written about often. See The Social Dilemma and -ites: Politics for two examples.

The slogan of our app is: “We believe good government starts with informed voters!”

How many of us are informed?

I don’t know how to fix America.  I don’t know how to fix our political system.  I wish I did.  I do know there’s a problem when we blindly vote for those, we *think we agree with.

I’m as guilty of this flaw as the rest of America.

If anyone has suggestions or answers about ways to actually fix this, I’d love to hear it.  Not hypothetical “tear the system down!”  No, how can we actually start tomorrow to try to fix this?

The app I’m working on will work to keep us more informed about our local leaders so we can hopefully keep them more accountable.  Does anyone even know who their local officials are?

If you’re interested in the app please let me know.  Looking for feedback on it now. The web version can be viewed here: https://politikilocal.com/

If you have thoughts on how to fix politics, please let us all know.  Something has to change.

  • Satan’s Story

    Satan’s Story

    Who is Satan?

I believe a careful reading of different scriptural records gives us a picture of Satan’s progression and tells us how he ultimately ended up cast down.  There will be a lot of scriptural references here (duh).  If you follow the story something becomes pretty clear about Satan.  There’s a major revelation I learned about Satan that I never understood, and I don’t think many church members know.

Before I start I want to mention, my interest in studying Satan is the opposite of my interest in studying Christ, but helps with the same purpose.  I think it’s good to study Satan to see how he fell and to avoid the behavior he exhibited that led him there.  Through his story you see examples of pride, unrighteous ambition, anger, envy, jealousy, bitterness, selfishness, along with many other negative attributes.  All of Satan’s attributes are the direct opposite to the traits of Jesus Christ.  Ultimately Satan became a being of darkness.  He rejected all light.  Many around us reject light and I think as we understand Satan and understand his motivations (to tempt, enslave, and control us) we are better suited to withstand him.  With that, we begin.

Satan’s story starts in the Book of Moses chapter 4:1-2:

And I, the Lord God, spake unto Moses, saying: That Satan, whom thou hast commanded in the name of mine Only Begotten, is the same which was from the beginning, and he came before me, saying—Behold, here am I, send me, I will be thy son, and I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it; wherefore give me thine honor.

But, behold, my Beloved Son, which was my Beloved and Chosen from the beginning, said unto me—Father, thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever.

Here we see what I believe is well known to Latter-day Saints.  Heavenly Father asked, “who will I send?”

Satan came forth and responded, “Behold, here am I, send me, I will be thy son, and I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it; wherefore give me thine honor.”

Christ said, “Father, thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever.”

We know what happens here, though it isn’t said in these two verses.  Christ is chosen by the Father.

Prayers to our Heavenly Father, in the name of our Savior Jesus Christ Amen - Home | Facebook

Now we’re going to jump to a new book of scripture to continue Satan’s story.  Abraham 3:24-28 reads:

    24 And there stood one among them that was like unto God, and he said unto those who were with him: We will go down, for there is space there, and we will take of these materials, and we will make an earth whereon these may dwell;

    25 And we will prove them herewith, to see if they will do all things whatsoever the Lord their God shall command them;

26 And they who keep their first estate shall be added upon; and they who keep not their first estate shall not have glory in the same kingdom with those who keep their first estate; and they who keep their second estate shall have glory added upon their heads for ever and ever.

27 And the Lord said: Whom shall I send? And one answered like unto the Son of Man: Here am I, send me. And another answered and said: Here am I, send me. And the Lord said: I will send the first.

28 And the second was angry, and kept not his first estate; and, at that day, many followed after him.

In verse 24 – “one among them that was like unto God” – clearly refers to Jesus Christ.  He is speaking to “those who were with him.”  He goes on to talk about the first and second estates of man, of us.  Verse 27 is where it gets important.

Verse 27 – The Lord (Jesus Christ) said, “Whom shall I send?”  Note that Christ is following the same pattern He learned from His Father. “And one answered like unto the Son of Man.”  This is Adam, the first man, or Michael as he was known in the premortal existence.  Adam said, “Here am I, send me.”

Still in verse 27 – “And another answered and said: Here am I, send me.” – This will prove to be Satan.

“And the Lord said: I will send the first.”

    Now the critical verse 28:

“And the second was angry, and kept not his first estate; and, at that day, many followed after him.”

So, it is clearly put forth here.  I always thought Satan rebelled at Christ being chosen by the Father, and maybe he did in his heart.  If you read Moses chapter 4 straight through that is how it seems.  But when you read this story sequentially, we see what actually happened.  Christ was chosen by the Father.  Christ is essentially now leading the “project” under the direction of Heavenly Father.  He is standing with others helping in the work.  He follows the Father’s pattern and asks who will be the first man.  Here Christ chooses Adam over Satan.

This adds a dimension to my understanding of Satan.  A couple things of note.  First, we know from the beginning Satan wanted the glory and wanted all of God’s children to return to heaven (see Moses 4:1).  When he is passed over, he doesn’t openly rebel yet.  When Christ is choosing who will be the first man, it’s possible Satan still saw a way to foil God’s plan and have all the honor given to him.  He would go down as the first man and he would refuse to fall.  If Satan went as the first man and refused to fall, man could never choose and therefore could never sin. If man couldn’t sin, there would be no need for a redeemer, there would be no choice, repentance, or progression. Satan would bring everyone back to heaven and in so doing destroy their agency.  I think this was his plan.

Christ wisely chooses Adam to be the father of all and lead the human race into mortality.

It’s at this point we see Satan has had enough.  He’s been passed over once by the Father. Now the one who took what he believed to be his rightful spot is choosing to pass him over as well.

Verse 28: “And the second (Satan) was angry, and kept not his first estate; and, at that day, many followed after him. – Emphasis added.

Was Satan part of Heavenly Father's original plan?

Here we see Satan’s rebellion.  Here we see he leads “many” away.  Before we continue with Satan’s story, I feel it’s important to remind you:  Congratulations!  If you’re reading this, you kept your first estate and are in the process of keeping your second estate.  Keep it up and you’re promised to “have glory added upon (your) head for ever and ever” (Abraham 3:26).

    Back to Satan.

Our story picks back up in Revelations chapter 12.  I’ll be using the Joseph Smith Translation as it makes everything so much clearer.

The first part of Revelations 12:4 reads:

“And there appeared another sign in heaven; and behold, a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth.”

The great red dragon is obviously Satan, and here we see he drew away one third of the children of God after him. He and his followers were cast down to earth.

    Revelations 12:6

    “And there was war in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought against Michael;

Michael (Adam) and his angels fought against Satan and his angels.

Verse 7 tells us that Michael and his angels (who might be us!?) prevailed.

    Revelations 12:8

“Neither was there place found in heaven for the great dragon, who was cast out; that old serpent called the devil, and also called Satan, which deceiveth the whole world; he was cast out into the earth; and his angels were cast out with him.”

Here we see the official result.  There was no more place found in heaven for Satan, his followers, and their rebellion against Christ, which meant rebellion against God.  Satan’s plan was foiled.  He was not chosen to be the redeemer of man and he was not chosen to be the first man where he could foil God’s Plan of Salvation.  He was cast down, in bitterness.

In conclusion, it doesn’t appear Satan rebelled at the outset. He was conniving and always looking for another way to enslave us, God’s children.  I mentioned it earlier but every person on this earth already chose Christ.  We were not fooled by Satan.  We are here.

How did Satan get one third to follow him?  I think if we carefully consider this question we can come up with some likely possibilities.  There were many in the premortal existence that maybe didn’t properly prepare for this life, our second estate.  When the time came to be tested, those who didn’t prepare would be fearful.  We knew that some would fail to reach the Celestial Kingdom, and those among the host of heaven who had not used their agency to prepare well for mortal life were likely cognizant of that fact. From there it would be easy for Satan to convince some that they would fail, and they should therefore follow him.

Secondly, I believe Satan’s focus in the premortal life would have been to doubt Jesus Christ and his ability to redeem us.  I believe Satan would have told many that Christ would fail, and then what?  They would all fail and never be able to return home.  I believe Satan likely attacked Christ.  This would also be an attack on the ability to repent.  Satan would have told those who didn’t use their agency well premortally that they wouldn’t use their agency well in life, that they wouldn’t repent, and change, and improve, and would ultimately fail.  It’s the same tactic Satan uses today.

I invite everyone to hold firmly in your heart, remember, you chose Christ already.  You were valiant already.  You were brave already.  You may have already fought Satan in heaven with Michael. You won.  You are still fighting Satan today and you can still win.  Remember that he is the father of lies, and Christ is our salvation.  Look to Christ, keep your faith in him, keep repenting, keep changing, keep looking to Christ and we will all return to Him again.

I know that Satan is never giving up, just like he never gave up in the premortal life.  Just like in the premortal life we will prevail.  We have Christ on our side.  With Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father on our team, we cannot lose.

Was God the Father the literal father of Jesus Christ?
