This book was a breakdown of Paul’s life and everything he ever wrote – thus the title.  I haven’t read the New Testament beginning to end.  I want to finish the Old Testament first.  This book helped me get a better understanding of Paul’s writings.  His writing was deep and powerful.  I also think his writings have always been and are increasingly misunderstood.

Paul was such a fascinating figure.  I’ve long wondered what it would have been like to be alongside him.  Everything he did he did with such zeal.  Reading and learning about him, I’m awed by his work ethic.  He’s somebody to be admired for his hard work.  The fervor with which he did whatever he put his mind to.  It’s motivating on one hand and terrifying on the other.  Few can live up to the devotion Paul had to what he was passionate for.  We are lucky his passion turned towards the Gospel of Jesus Christ and worship of God as we’ve seen how his efforts against the early saints caused much pain and suffering.

The book starts with a history of Paul.  Where he was from, who he was, how he became who he became.  The beginning was basically a historical biography of who Paul was.  As Paul got into the portion of his life where he was writing so much, the book transitions.

This book is one I will refer back to often as I continue to study scripture.  It had a great breakdown of Paul’s individual epistles and when they were estimated to be written.  For example, chapter 13 was “Paul’s third missionary journey (continued).”  It gave a detailed breakdown of the epistle to the Galatians including everything Paul said, the authenticity, importance, style, and doctrine from that epistle.  I would find myself marking entire pages during these chapters.

There were many notable things I learned about Paul from this book.  One was that he worked throughout his missionary ministry.  Despite travelling all over the ancient world and spending many, many years as a full-time missionary, it never appears that Paul was paid for his ministry.  He was given “gifts” from church members from time to time.  But it seems very clear that Paul always worked.  The predominant theory is that he was a tent builder.  I found this very interesting given that many modern-day ministers point to Paul’s writings as proof that Paul advocated a paid ministry.

One amazing thing about this book was the feeling I had while reading it.  Especially while reading the breakdown of Paul’s letters.  There were moments where I’d pause and ask myself what I was feeling.  This isn’t normally something I do, but I was aware I was feeling something.  It was joy.  It was a feeling like, ‘what is this earth and what does it really matter but to be a test for something greater?  Live righteously and prepare to live with Christ and God forever.’  While reading his writings everything seemed so clear and simple.  It was a feeling in my chest while reading his messages.  Pure joy.  Pure peace.  Pure comfort in the future if I am faithful.  Motivation to be faithful.  As long as I am obedient and keep faith, I truly have nothing to fear.  It’s a similar feeling to what I get when I read the Book of Mormon.  That testified and made it so clear to me that what I was reading was the word of God, meant to lift up and inspire.

I’m grateful for this book and the understanding it gave me of Paul and his writings.  As I mentioned, I know I’ll be using this book often as I continue to read scripture and one day study Paul’s writings more intently.  The principles Paul taught were pure.  He was called by Jesus Christ Himself which tells us of the importance of Paul’s work.  The missionary effort Paul put forth and his contribution to building God’s kingdom is inspiring.  He has the greatest conversion story of all time.  We could all be better if we spent more time aspiring to be like Paul the Apostle.

  • Second Coming is Upon Us (maybe?)

Second Coming is Upon Us (maybe?)

I’ve been pondering a scripture that many might find a peculiar scripture to study.  I think value can be taken from almost any scripture.

    1 Nephi 18:23 reads:

“And it came to pass that after we had sailed for the space of many days we did arrive at the promised land; and we went forth upon the land, and did pitch our tents, and we did call it the promised land.”

“The Rapture,” the “Second Coming,” the “Millennium,” the “End of Times,” it comes in many different terms.  There’s a belief in a lot of Christianity that the end will come overnight, Christ will appear, and the millennium will be ushered in.

From what I’ve read and studied and what modern revelation tells us, this will not be the case.  There will be a long, drawn out period of famine, war, disease, fires, earthquakes, and other natural disasters that will go on for some time before Christ returns.

Check out that list.  War.  Disease.  Fire.  Sound familiar?

The fall of society and of God’s chosen land (United States of America) will come before the Millennium is ushered in.  The faith of the saints, the believers of Christ, will be tested in serious and tragic ways.  There will be much suffering.  If your foundation and faith in Christ is not firm before it comes you could find yourself asking, “Why is God letting this happen?”

We’ve always known this was going to happen.  The scriptures have talked about our day since the beginning of time.  Now we’re seeing it happen.

Back to 1 Nephi 18:23 (with some emphasis added):

“And it came to pass that after we had sailed for the space of many days we did arrive at the promised land; and we went forth upon the land, and did pitch our tents, and we did call it the promised land.”

Many estimates put that “space of many days” that Lehi and his family sailed as at least 1-2 years.  That’s 1-2 years on a cramped boat sailing across the ocean.  After many days they finally arrived at the promised land.

I believe this will be similar to how Christ’s coming will approach us. We will spend many days being tossed about by the winds and waves. We will be required to endure a lot of suffering before we can arrive at the promised land.

As things get more difficult, I pray that each of us individually considers how strong our faith in Christ truly is.  It’s easy today to casually say, “I believe in Jesus Christ.”  But what about when it’s hard?  What about when your life is in jeopardy because of that belief?  Will you still profess Him who will never turn His back on you?

Finally, while things are scary in our world, and only getting scarier, it’s important to remember Romans 8:35-39:

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Be prepared. Keep hope. Look to Christ.

  • Baby

    Baby

    I am scared.

    Can I protect you?

    Will you be bright?

    Will you be happy?

Will you be strong or gentle?

    Will you be mine?

    I will be yours.

You will be gentle and strong.

You will bring joy to all those around you.

You will bring light to the world.

    I will protect you.

    Don’t be afraid.

Your mom will teach you some things.  I will teach you others.

I know I knew you before.  I know you taught me before I came here.  You will continue to teach me once you join me here.

I know you’ve been anxious to come.  I know because every time I prayed about you God told me.  We are ready for you.

I will do my best to support you always.  I will do my best to shield you from the world.

Can I ever be ready for the responsibility of your life?

You’re coming into a scary world.  The world needs you now, more than ever.  Be kind.  Be gentle.  Be strong.

It’s the year 2020.  The world needs you desperately.  Don’t hold back.  Give your all.  Shine bright.

    I love you already.

    My girl.  Our girl.

  • An Angel

    An Angel

Some of God’s children are special beyond measure.

They never lose their innocence and childlike wonder.

I have a cousin who is like that.

    She taught me a lot.

She has taught me about true joy.  She has taught me about true happiness.

The simple things in life would bring such a laugh.

The kind of laugh you couldn’t avoid.

The kind of laugh that made you laugh, I guess because her joy was so contagious, so infectious.

    Olivia and her bike

I had to laugh with her.

    God’s plan is perfect.

Despite a loving family, loving parents and siblings, there was never a perfect place on this earth for her.

I’m not sure she ever had a comfortable moment on this earth.

Despite that, still the joy, the joy was ever present.

A new dress.  A butterfly.  A rad motorcycle.

She could teach us so much.

There was never a perfect place for her on this earth.

I know when I next see her, she will be clothed with such beauty and glory that I will be blinded by her.

    But God’s plan is perfect.

I know there is a perfect place for her with Him.

If you looked very closely you could see her glory here.

I know there is a perfect place for her.

I’ve never been around a soul who deserved a perfect place more.

I’m thankful for what she has taught me.  I’m grateful for her strength.  I’m grateful for her fight to stay here and teach us.

I know her family is grieving now.  We all are.  We grieve when someone so good is taken from us.

Take comfort in where she’s gone.

No place was good enough for her here.  She’s finally in a place deserving of her light.

    We will miss her.

Enjoy paradise Olivia. You are a princess every day and I can’t wait to see you again.
