  • Destruction of Christ

    Destruction of Christ

While looking at the cover picture for this post, an obvious realization came to me.

Look closely at that picture. What do you see?

The top of the picture is glorious. You can faintly make out a being in that bright light, coming out of the clouds.

It was the bottom of the picture that caught my attention. One word comes to mind: desolation.

It hit me why desolation and pain and suffering and death and starvation and destruction must happen to the people on this Earth before Christ’s Second Coming. People on earth are so stubborn and prideful. We wouldn’t accept Christ if He came out of the sky right now. With Netflix, food, water, and our comfortable lives, if we saw Him come straight out of the clouds as a bright star, we would be fascinated for as long as we’re fascinated with anything that hits the news.

Many would deny it as some sort of special effects stunt put on by the media.

Do you realize last year the government came out and said UFOs exist?

The collective reaction of Earth seemed to be, “cool.”

How long would Christ’s coming fascinate us if it happened tomorrow? A week? A year? A day? Then it would become old news and we’d move on. Seriously. Seems ridiculous? I think it’s true.

Destruction will make people humble themselves and accept Christ when He comes. It will make some people realize man isn’t great at governing a planet and we need some help from something, anything. For those opposed to God and religion, what happens before the Second Coming may even make them concede we need help from the divine. The destruction of Earth that will come in the last days (these days) will hopefully lead to many realizing Satan’s principles (which now run the world) are destructive. Greed, envy, anger, jealousy, deceit, lust, and revenge cannot run a fruitful society.

The destruction will make people realize they need Jesus Christ. We see it now, today. No one thinks they need Christ in their life. No one cares about God. We’re comfortable. Life is good.

What happens when life isn’t as comfortable? People turn to God.

Life will get drastically less “good” before His coming. Many will cry about how it is unfair and how could a loving God let this happen to us? We let this happen to us. Our choices will lead us to that point.

What is the being in the top of that picture coming to do? What will Jesus Christ be coming to the earth to do? Look at the bottom of the picture again. When the Earth is destroyed, all our comforts and idols that we relied so heavily on gone, when that time comes, He will be coming to heal. He will be coming to fix what is broken. Who can deny we are broken?

While the destruction of the Second Coming can be a frightening topic, for the faithful it will be a bittersweet time to rejoice. While destruction happens around us, we can have faith and confidence that God is keeping all His promises to us, His children.

When that time comes, as fear grips the Earth, we can have joy amidst the world’s uncertainty. We will know our Savior is coming. We will know we can rely on Him. We will know, as long as we put our faith and trust in Him, all will work out for our benefit and for His glory.

As the world falls deeper and deeper into turmoil, what a comfort that is.

  • Letter to Grandpa Q

    Letter to Grandpa Q

My grandpa Stan recently turned 90 years old. For his birthday, all his children and grandchildren wrote him a letter. This is the letter I wrote to my grandpa.

    Grandpa,

One of my earliest memories was my first and only trip to Grandaddy Lake. It was horrible. Keep in mind, I was maybe 4. It rained the whole time. It was so miserable. But I still remember it.

I remember hiking back after the long week there. It was raining. I’m not sure it ever stopped raining. I was walking through mud, and I was crying. Everyone else was hiking with big backpacks for the trip. I had my little toy backpack on, and I was crying about it, about the hike, about the rain, about the mud, about my miserable existence.

You got frustrated with me. It was the only time I recall seeing you frustrated/angry/mad. I cried more.

My dad took my little backpack. I still have a memory of my dad shirtless, hiking in the rain. He was hiking now with his huge backpack on his back and my little backpack on his shoulder.

I looked around at all my aunts, uncles, you, and my dad and realized no one else was complaining. Everyone was cold, wet, and frustrated, but no one was complaining.

This core memory has stuck with me. I like to think it impacted me and in some minor, or possibly major ways, has shaped me.

The Las Vegas Quackenbush clan (my family) has never been to Granddaddy Lake. We have our modern-day equivalent. We now go to the theme park Six Flags Magic Mountain multiple times a year. It is a requirement that any future in-law go through the gauntlet of a 12-hour day at Magic Mountain before they can even think about being accepted into the family.

When Beth came to Six Flags with us for the first time, we were all so happy because there was a high heat warning. The lines were great! Meanwhile, we almost died. My roommate came with us to Six Flags once. He’s sworn to never return.

I now have two daughters that I joke, tongue-in-cheek, about needing to remove as much Cannon from (Beth’s maiden name) and insert as much Quackenbush into as possible.

This is the Grandaddy Lake mindset. More importantly, this is what it is to be a Quackenbush. I take pride in my name.

    I take pride in you.

I take pride in our pioneer roots.

I take pride in the foundation of faith I have been afforded.

I take pride in what you and Grandma built, for me.

I take pride in what you and Grandma built, for my family, for my daughters.

I want to thank you for choosing an eternal companion of from among the devoted young women of The Kingdom. That is a line from my patriarchal blessing. I was able to choose an eternal companion who is an amazing mother, wife, and person because of you. I am able to raise my daughters with a confidence in things eternal because of you and Grandma. I am able to see the bigger picture, endure, have faith, progress, learn, grow, and get better, all with an understanding of who I am and where I come from, because of you and Grandma.

I don’t know what I did to earn the position in the family I’ve been given, but I thank you.

I look forward to one day having a life review. I hope to see some or all of your life review and Grandma’s life review. I look forward to one day seeing all the sacrifices endured and trials met head on by Grandma and yourself so that I could have the mortal experience I have been afforded. You and Grandma are a foundation. You created a foundation. In this life I’ll never fully understand all you went through and struggled with so I could have what I have. One day, I hope to understand. On that day, I will stand, and I will kneel, and I will thank my progenitors, you, for what you did for me. We all will.

Thank you. We love you. We are grateful for you.

With all the love you deserve, and I can give,

    Brayden

  • Bees Perceive Time….or do they

    Bees Perceive Time….or do they

    Can bees perceive time?

Scientists put sugar water outside of a beehive every day at 4:00pm and found that the bees soon started coming out of their hives for the sugar water at 4:00pm every day. The bees did this even when there was no longer any sugar water left out for them.

    Therefore, bees perceive time.

But some said, “Hold on, what if the bees are measuring the angle of the sun.”

So they did the experiment in the dark. The bees still came out at 4:00pm.

    Therefore, bees perceive time.

But…some said, “Hold on, what if the bees are measuring the heat from the sun?”

These back and forths happened repeatedly until the experiment was eventually performed underground in a salt mine.

But…some said, “What if the bees are measuring the rotation of the Earth?”

How do we prove that bees perceive time?

Then, a scientist did the exact same experiment, not in a salt mine, but in Paris. Then that scientist flew the bees to New York City. The bees left the hive at 10:00am because they had jetlag.

This proved that bees perceive time… I think? (Maybe bees have an internal clock completely separate from our “time.” Do bees, in this case, perceive time “more” than I do because I don’t think I could be that precise…. But I digress). I’m not smart enough to think of another, “What if bees were doing this,” scenario, but what this did make me think about is how faulty our human logic is. Almost anything can be proven or disproven. What do we really know…about anything?

With all our science, logic, and knowledge, we still basically know nothing. Our very own bodies are a mystery. We still don’t know how the pyramids were built. There are theories, of course, but we’ll never really know until it is revealed to us. I’m amazed at the pompous ignorance of our generation. Our generation believes that because we can Google something we’re the smartest generation to ever live on the earth, while most of us can’t begin to explain how “Google” even works.

This story just made me think of the frailty of our own brilliance.  It’s hard to prove anything and we’re really not as smart as we all think. That’s all.

  • Unity, Peace, and Love

    Unity, Peace, and Love

I recently watched a video depicting the famous rameumptom of Alma chapter 31. I’ve written about the rameumptom before.

The rameumptom was a tower built by the Zoramites for their prayers. They would stand atop this small tower and pray. Their prayers consisted of proclamations of how they were better than their brethren, and they thanked God for making them so much better than others.

In this video depiction, it showed a fancily dressed person strutting to the rameumptom, pushing aside someone on his way, cutting a line, and walking to the top while someone was already there. That person, apparently properly interpreting the danger of standing up to this man, quickly left his prayer so this man could yell with pride, “Holy, holy God, we believe that thou art God and we believe that thou art holy.”

That video can be watched here if you’re interested.

What I thought about as I watched this video is how strange the behavior would be for a follower of God to strut and push someone out of their way to offer a public prayer of pride. It was the spiritual God-follower pushing someone rudely out of the way that stood out to me.

President Nelson, Elder Soares, and Elder Christofferson recently all talked to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints about being kinder, more charitable, and avoiding contention in one session of General Conference. The impact of three of the highest-ranking members of our Church and apostles and prophets of the Lord all speaking on essentially the same topic in a 2-hour span was quite jarring.

    The three talks were:

    President Nelson – Peacemakers Needed

Elder Soares – Followers of the Prince of Peace

Elder Christofferson – One in Christ

As I watched this video of the corrupt Zoramites, I worried about this message from our leaders. I personally have been witness to so much contention and unkindness in social media in “LDS” or “doctrine” or supposed “Christ-centered groups” where combativeness sometimes seems more important than kindness and love. This has led me to lessen my usage of social media, despite loving the doctrinal topics sometimes explored, due to the hateful nature that the topics are explored in.

I worry about members of the Church of Jesus Christ that take being right more seriously than being loving.

How many members of our religion and all religions strut around with our beliefs and act like we’re better than those around us? We must not be the Zoramites. This, I believe, is what President Nelson, Elder Soares, and Elder Christofferson are trying to tell us. Followers of Jesus Christ should be loving first, second, and last. Followers of Jesus Christ should be distinguished by their kindness.

This behavior of someone knocking someone out of the way to go pray looks so similar to someone debating the merits of Christ’s gospel by putting down and insulting others. I hope we all avoid this behavior. As representatives of Jesus Christ, it’s important we remember the two great commandments: love and love.

  • Faith of an Atheist – Bouncing Atoms

Faith of an Atheist – Bouncing Atoms

What does an atheist have faith in?

We all have faith. We have faith that we eat, and the food will sustain our body. We have faith that we drink, and the water sustains our body. We have faith that we breathe, and air sustains our body. We have faith that we will move, and it happens. Every act of our lives is an act of faith.

As Lectures on Faith Lecture First says: “without [faith], both mind and body would be in a state of inactivity, and all their exertions would cease, both physical and mental.”

Whether you believe in a Creator or not, this fact remains: all have faith. The only question is: what is your faith in?

I previously wrote about the faith of an atheist HERE. That post talks about the hope of an atheist. What about the faith?

If we all live by faith, what does an atheist have faith in?

The only thing I can think that an atheist has faith in is their self.

When you remove God from the equation, what else is there? There is you, your mind, your thoughts, your supremacy. Not only that, if there is no God, then this all just happened by chance. You are a product of random chance, with no meaning. You are an object with atoms inside of you bouncing around causing you to do things. If this is all by chance, there is no free will. If there is no God and we are all happenstance, if we are all a great coincidence, then we are Gods, and there are no Gods. There is nothing. There is no point.

A lack of a belief in God is a lack of belief in anything. If this life is not about a bigger plan then it’s all pointless.
